The seemingly contradictory third panel of the comic strip in the original post (see above) is meant in the following sense.
The "future" is part of the self-image we concoct along our lives, which also includes the "past" and thus defines the "present": the overall CONFIGURATION OF THE TIME - which is indeed what is meant by "carpe diem" (also) - it's truly what gives a full meaning to the unfathomable things of life.
Every single "moment" is made up in such a way (à la J. Barbour): we are surrounded by reality, which is composed of "all the time" (event), and which can have "meaning" only in this acceptation. The search for "meaning of things" always fails, specifically when you do it on the cheap, hoping to find it without running too many risks, in the belief that it's a kind of "magic recipe", or a "fortune-cookie-pick-up" sort of thing, and so on ...
That's not the way it works ... Don't hope for it! ...
The so-called "meaning of life" is not the "secret of all secrets", it is not the "philosopher's stone", it is not a "mystery of the faith", it is not that big a deal. ...
As always, the secret in all magics is nothing but trivial trick, a deception, the result of a mischievous complicity between the deceived and the deceiver ... Truths are hidden only for those who make ostrich lives ...
No way! ... Just getting along, one moment after another, as long as it lasts ...
We all, individually, do but one single thing, that will last a lifetime: the future is indeed hidden, but the past also is, and most of all, the present does!
"Learn From The Future" ("LEARN FROM TOMORROW") - As well as from the past, it is about becoming aware of the time in its entirety/eternity:
You are on top of a mountain you have reached for with great effort, and admire a magnificent panorama all around you at 360° ... And you know that beyond the horizon there is still more of the world, and beyond those blue skies there is even more, much more ... It is your own point of view, it's unique, unrepeatable and yours, exclusively yours ...
You mean ... "Is there anything then - in a universe otherwise boundless - which could not otherwise exist, if it weren't for you and for your will to take a stroll in the mountains, in a day like any other?" ...

lo si cerca “a risparmio”, sperando di trovarlo senza correre troppi rischi,
nella convinzione che sia una ricetta magica, un biscotto della felicità e via
dicendo …
Non è così che funziona … Non ci sperate! ...
Il cosiddetto “senso della vita” non è il
segreto dei segreti, non è la pietra filosofale, non è un mistero della fede,
non è poi chissà che … Come sempre accade, il segreto in tutte le magie non è
che un banale trucco, un inganno, il risultato di una malcelata complicità fra
ingannato e ingannatore … Le verità sono nascoste solo per chi fa la vita da
struzzo …
Non esiste! Tirare avanti, un momento dopo l’altro,
tirando a campare finché dura …
Noi tutti, singolarmente, facciamo una sola
cosa, che durerà tutta la vita: il futuro è sì nascoto, ma anche il passato lo
è e, più di tutti, il presente lo è!

– oltre che del passato, significa prendere coscienza del tempo nella sua interezza/eternità:
siete sulla cima di una montagna che avete
raggiunt con grande fatica e ammirate un magnifico panorama, tutto intorno a voi
a 360° … E sapete che al di là dell’orizzonte c’è ancora altro mondo e che al di
là quel cielo azzurro c’è ancora di più, molto di più … E’ il vostro punto d
iivsta, è unico, irripetibile e vostro, solo vostro …
Vorresti dire forse che ... "Esiste dunque qualcosa in un universo per
altro smisurato, che non potrebbe altrimenti esistere, se non fosse per voi e
per la vostra volontà di fare una passeggiata in montagna, in un giorno
qualunque ?" …
